The phantom of a former cleaner in a brown uniform and the ghostly sounds of children playing in the Rio Grande Plaza Hotel, Laredo; the Devil's Stepping Stones in Long Island Sound, used by Satan to escape from Native American warriors; the ghosts of hanged men who wander the eighteenth century Jean Bonnet Tavern in Bedford; the ghosts of the Mineral Springs Hotel in Alton, including the marble playing child Cassandra who drowned in the swimming pool, the fragrant Jasmine Lady, a drunken artist (who didn't have time to complete the Crystal Room's mural) and the unfortunate George; the spectre in a top hat that haunts the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel in St Petersburg; the manifestation of the Virgin Mary to save her painting, which hung in St Mary's Immaculate Conception church in Johnstown, from the flood which devastated the city in 1889 (in 2013 it was donated by the Benedictine Sisters to the Johnstown Heritage Association and now hangs in the Grand Halle, on the site of the original church) (incidentally, a 1926 silent movie called The Johnstown Flood starred Janet Gaynor and featured Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard as extras); the altar in Wizard's Glen near Dalton, where a hunter called John Chamberlain rescued a Native American girl who was to be sacrificed to the demons of the forest; the strange phenomena at the Driskill Hotel, Austin, including the odd sensation experienced by guests who stare at the third floor picture of a child holding flowers; the phantom of a weeping Native American woman who, on moonlit nights, repeats her death jump from a cliff in Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park (Creve Coeur Park), in St Louis County, where she tried to join her late husband in the spirit world; the giant Maushope of Native American legend, who lived on Martha's Vineyard; the phantom woman of the Rockport Inn Bed & Breakfast in Rockport; cowboys still searching for their gold in Rios Canyon, San Diego; the spirits of a child and a Native American woman who haunt Pike Place Market in Seattle; the Prohibition era celebration that may still be heard in the Hotel Andra (once the Claremont) in Seattle; and the ghost ship Adventure Galley, commanded by Captain Kidd, seen near Bear Mountain Bridge, are among the strange tales of the USA.

The musical water sprite in the pools of the French Broad River, east of Asheville, who dooms those it lures, not indifferently like the lorelei but with the deliberate malevolence of a siren; Santa Paula's horned, white and hairy anthropoid, the Billiwhack Monster; the ghosts of the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon, including a dark figure seen outside and the friendly spirit of Fred Harvey, a former owner; the skeletal Rambout Van Dam who rows the Tappan Zee; the spirits of Kate Morgan, a little boy and girl, the mistress of a millionaire, a Victorian lady who likes to dance and a former caretaker in San Diego's famous Hotel Del Coronado (used in the movie Some Like it Hot and remarkable for its Victorian wooden architecture); the reputedly haunted Renaissance Los Angeles Airport hotel, part of the Marriott chain; the gash-throated phantom of Luc Simone Aury that haunts the area outsde of the Amelia Island Museum of History, formerly the Old Jail where he was hanged, in Fernandina Beach (his attempt at suicide failed and his throat was stitched by a surgeon but the long drop of the gallows caused his wound to open and shower the horrified spectators with blood - Aury couldn't have planned it better if he had tried!); the slender, man-eating hidebehind, a "fearsome critter" indeed, which can conceal itself behind any tree but which, unlike pink elephants, can be avoided by drinking alcoholic beverages; supernatural entities at Victoria's Black Swan Inn in San Antonio; creepy and malevolent black eyed children (Black Eyed Kids or BEKs) in Abilene; the spectre of the stubborn septuagenarian Giles Corey, which appears as a harbinger of disaster in Salem where, being pressed to death with weights over two days for refusing to plead to the charge of witchcraft, Corey merely shouted "more weight!" (although it was the only instance of pressing a man to death in New England history and cruel even for its time, Judge Corwin, whose house still stands in Salem, actually stood on Coreys chest, demanding that he plead); the unexplained phenomena and spectres of the Hotel Lawrence, Dallas, including the ghost of a gambler; the almost innumerable traditions, magical spells and superstitions of the Ozarks, some of which are recorded in Harold Bell Wright's novel The Shepherd of the Hills and in the John Wayne movie of the same name (though a rather different plot); the finger marks of the Great Spirit, according to the Iroquois, as seen in the Finger Lakes to the west of Syracuse; and sewer rats so huge that people have petted them like dogs, are more supernatural myths or scary stories of the United States of America.
