Native American stories about the wendigo, a ghoulish, insatiable, man-eating manitou that was sometimes a mutated, cannibalistic human; supernatural entities at Victoria's Black Swan Inn in San Antonio; the strange phenomena in John W Woolfolk House (Colonial Apartments), sometimes called The House of a Thousand Cadavers, in Columbus (the house contains private dwellings so do not be a nuisance); spectral lights and other mysterious phenomena at the Indian River Inn & Conference Center in New Smyrna; the evil eye of Molly "Mom" Rinker, a witch and revolutionary spy whose lookout was Mom Rinker's Rock in Fairmount Park, near Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia; the ghost of the Jameson Inn, quite modern but already haunted, on Cracker Barrel Drive in Crestview; the skeletal Rambout Van Dam who rows the Tappan Zee; the Beast of Bray Road, possibly a a werewolf, seen near Elkhorn; the ghosts of the huge Swedish Governor Printz and his friends, who burned down his former home, Printzhof (Printz Hall), shortly after a spectral party where the living caretaker was forced to play the violin (the foundations of Printzhof were rediscovered in 1937 in what is now Governor Printz Park in Essington, Tinicum Island and your best chance of seeing a repeat of the phantom revelry is on the evening of the autumnal equinox); tall tales of the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe (some scholars regard Wisconsin as his true home and the earliest collected stories were probably in "Legends of Paul Bunyan, Lumberjack" published by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters); the Elusive Muck Monster of Lake Worth Lagoon; the monster of Wolf Pond, a thirty foot black serpent with yellow stripes and a green head; the pirate treasure, possibly Captain Kidd's, buried on New York harbour's Liberty Island but protected by a fire breathing devil; the ghost ship Adventure Galley, commanded by Captain Kidd, seen near Bear Mountain Bridge; and ghostly footsteps heard on the Washington Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis (the poet John Berryman and others have leapt to their deaths from the bridge), are among the strange tales of the USA.

The camera loving spirits of Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Bedford, who appear unexpectedly on developed photographs; the spirit of a 1920s flapper with bobbed hair that haunts Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park; the burning ghost ship seen near Ocracoke Island, a spectral reminder that a ship's crew murdered their passengers for gold and then destroyed the evidence; Pecos Bill with his coyote family, his rattlesnake Shake (that served as his lasso) and his true love the catfish-riding Slue-Foot Sue (Neil Armstrong may have been the first MAN to set FOOT on the moon but Sue banged her HEAD on it many years earlier, after being thrown by Bill's appropriately named horse, Widow-Maker); the haunted parking garage and eighteenth floor lounge of the Los Angeles Airport Marriott; the phantom soldiers of Devil's Den, Gettysburg; the Lake Worth monster, a creature appearing as part man, part goat and part fish; the thunderbird of Apache legend that dwells in the Superstition Mountains; the numerous hauntings and psychic phenomena of Manitowoc Place (formerly the Evergreen Inn Hotel) in Manitowoc; the creation, by the Great Spirit, of the Natural Bridge over Cedar Creek, Rockbridge County, for the benefit of the Monacan tribe (their women and children escaped across the bridge while their menfolk were able to defend the narrow path from a larger number of Powhatan warriors); the ghosts of a man, a woman and two children at the Mirabeau Park Hotel in Spokane Valley; the yells and screams of Native American warriors and their victims, a woman and two children, which may still be heard in a small valley close to the mouth of Chartiers Creek near Pittsburgh (ghostly orbs or death lights are also sometimes seen); the phantom guests of Desoto House Hotel in Galena (the hotel boasts Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant as former living guests); the goatman of Beltsville, possibly a mad scientist who was a victim of one of his own experiments, who swings his axe at passing cars; and the ninety-two foot winged, alligator like monster, killed by ranchers between the Huachuca and Whetstone ranges, in what is now Coronado National Forest, in 1890 (a sample was sent for scientific examination - what happened to it?), are more supernatural myths or scary stories of the United States of America.
